The laws of logic describe the orderly way God designed our world and the orderly way He designed our minds to work. These laws are not human inventions. They flow from the very character of God. Because God is truthful, consistent, and unchanging, the world He created reflects those same attributes. And because we are made in His image, He has equipped us to think in clear and orderly ways.

When we understand these laws, we learn to think God’s thoughts after Him. We also become better equipped to discern truth, resist error, and counsel others according to Scripture.

Below is a simple but thorough explanation of the three basic laws of logic, why they matter, and how they strengthen your Christian walk.

1. The Law of Identity: God Is Who He Says He Is

The first law of logic, the Law of Identity, states that a thing is what it is. Something that is true cannot, at the same time, be something different. This principle is rooted in God’s own revelation. When Moses asked God for His name, God responded:

“I AM WHO I AM.” (Exodus 3:14)

God’s character is fixed. He does not redefine Himself. He does not shift with culture or change with human opinion. His nature is constant, consistent, and eternal. The Law of Identity simply reflects that truth.

Example:

A dog is a dog. It is always a dog. It does not become a cat based on someone’s feelings or preferences. Its identity is fixed.

In spiritual terms:

• If Scripture is God’s Word, it remains God’s Word.
• If sin is sin, renaming it will not make it righteous.
• If God created humans male and female, that identity does not shift by opinion or emotion.

Identity matters because truth does not bend or evolve. God has spoken, and what He has spoken remains true.

Our culture regularly attempts to redefine morality, identity, and truth itself. But the Law of Identity calls Christians to stand firmly on what God says is true. Truth has an identity, and that identity does not change.

2. The Law of Non-Contradiction: Truth Cannot Oppose Itself

The second law of logic states that two opposing statements cannot both be true at the same time and in the same way. Scripture affirms this because God never contradicts Himself.

“God… cannot lie.” (Titus 1:2)

Where there is contradiction, one side is wrong. God is never the one who is wrong.

Example:

A light cannot be both on and off at the same time. It must be one or the other. Spiritually, this becomes even more important. Jesus declared:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

This cannot be both true and false. Jesus cannot be both the only way and not the only way. This law is extremely useful in counseling. A counselee may say:

“I trust God,” but moments later, “God doesn’t know what He’s doing.” Both statements cannot be true simultaneously. One belief must be corrected by Scripture.

Many popular ideas crumble under the weight of this principle:

• “All religions are true.” (They contradict one another.)
• “There is no absolute truth.” (That is an absolute truth claim.)
• “Follow your heart.” (Even when your heart contradicts God’s Word?)

The Law of Non-Contradiction exposes the foolishness of such claims. Truth is never contradictory because God is never contradictory.

3. The Law of Excluded Middle: Truth Has Only Two Sides

The third law of logic states that a statement is either true or false. There is no third option.

Our world loves grey areas, especially in moral matters. But Scripture does not hesitate to divide truth from error. Jesus spoke in clear categories:

• light vs. darkness
• truth vs. lies
• righteousness vs. sin
• wisdom vs. foolishness

There is no neutral category where truth and error meet halfway.

Example:
Either Jesus rose from the dead, or He did not. There is no middle position.

Either Scripture is God’s inspired Word, or it is not. It cannot be partially inspired or “true for Christians but not for others.”

This law forces clarity in a world that thrives on ambiguity. It confronts the modern desire to soften moral absolutes and makes us deal honestly with what God has said. Truth is true. Error is error. There is no blending of the two.

1. They reflect God’s character Because God is consistent, logical, and truthful, the world He created, and the minds He gave us, operate according to His orderly nature.
